Frequently asked questions about Foil Drive
What is Foil Drive?
Foil Drive is the world’s first electric assist retrofit kit designed to turn your existing gear into a hybrid electric hydrofoil.
Unlike a dedicated e-foil which is often heavy, expensive, and built into a specific board Foil Drive is a modular system that mounts to the foil board and mast you already own. It bridges the gap between traditional surf/wing foiling and electric foiling.
Here is what makes it unique:
It is an Assist, not just a motor: The primary goal of Foil Drive is to provide the boost you need to get up on foil or catch a wave. Once you are flying, the motor (depending on the model) allows for low-drag gliding, letting you surf the energy of the ocean naturally without constant throttle.
Universal Compatibility: It is designed to be brand-agnostic. The motor pod clamps onto your existing foil mast, and the battery box mounts to the deck of your board (or is integrated into the board, depending on the generation), meaning you don’t have to buy a completely new setup.
Lightweight Performance: Because it is designed for hybrid use rather than continuous cruising, the system is significantly lighter than traditional e-foils. This keeps your board agile and responsive, maintaining the true feeling of foiling.
How long does the battery last?
The short answer: It depends on how you use it. For most riders using it as an "assist" to catch waves, a battery lasts 1 to 2 hours of surfing. If you use it as a continuous "e-foil" on flat water, it will last 20 to 45 minutes.
Because Foil Drive is a hybrid system, battery life is measured in two ways:
1. Surf / Assist Mode (Most Common)
Usage: You only use the motor for 5-10 seconds to catch a wave or get back out to the lineup. The motor is off while you are riding the wave.
Duration: A single battery typically lasts for a 1 to 2 hour session.
Why? You are only drawing power in short bursts, so the battery lasts much longer than the runtime suggests.
2. Continuous / E-Foil Mode
Usage: You hold the throttle down constantly to cruise around on flat water without waves.
Duration:
Assist MAX (Power Battery): Approx. 30-45 minutes.
Assist MAX (Sport Battery): Approx. 15-25 minutes.
Assist SLIM: Approx. 15–20 minutes (designed for performance surfing, not e-foiling).
Note: Heavier riders (90kg+) or smaller foil wings will drain the battery faster in this mode.
What is the Foil Drive Fusion?
The Foil Drive Fusion is the new Gen 2.5 system that bridges the gap between a lightweight Assist and a full-blown electric hydrofoil (e-foil).
While the standard Assist MAX and SLIM are designed primarily for short bursts of power to catch waves, the Fusion is designed for power and endurance. It features a significantly larger battery and higher voltage system, allowing you to use your existing board as a true e-foil for long-distance cruising.
Key Differences:
True Hybrid Capability: It offers the continuous runtime of an e-foil (approx. 45 to 60+ minutes of constant throttle) while maintaining the modularity of the Foil Drive system.
More Power: It runs on a 43V system (compared to 28V/40V on previous models), delivering higher torque and thrust, which is ideal for heavier riders or smaller foil wings.
Heavier but Powerful: It is heavier than the Assist MAX (approx. 7.8kg total install weight), but it is still significantly lighter than a dedicated e-foil board.
Integrated Design: The battery features a unibody design with an integrated nose cone, making it robust and easier to handle than the separate box-and-lid setup of the Assist kits.
Who is the Foil Drive Fusion for?
Flatwater Cruisers: Riders who want to cruise constantly without needing waves.
Heavy Riders: Those who need maximum torque to get up on foil.
Learners: The extra battery life provides more time to practice starts and balance without worrying about running out of juice.
